Capablanca in London: Cuban wizard gives simultaneous exhibition at City of London Chess Club

José R. Capablanca is presently in London, having crossed the Atlantic earlier this month on board the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria.  The Cuban Master intends to visit a number of major European cities en route to his diplomatic posting in St. Petersburg, where he is expected to take part in the great international tournament planned for next spring.

Yesterday Capablanca gave an exhibition of simultaneous play at the City of London Chess Club, rightly reputed one of the strongest in the world.  The lone performer took on 28 opponents at once, among whose ranks we note the names of Loman and Michell, both players of Master strength.  The large audience included not only veteran campaigner J.H. Blackburne but also no less a personage than the World Champion, Dr. Lasker himself, who, we understand, is soon to embark on a continental chess tour of his own.

Capablanca made the excellent score of 18 wins, seven defeats, and three draws against his accomplished opposition, improving on his result from a similar performance at the City of London Club two years ago.  We present below three victories by the young genius, whose progress during his European sojourn we expect to follow closely in this space.
