Roy T. Black yesterday improved his standing at the Rice Chess Club Summer Masters' Tournament by defeating Harold M. Phillips in a game adjourned from the tourney's fourth round. Black has now won two adjourned games since his swift defeat at the hands of José Capablanca a few days ago, and with 5 1/2 total points to his credit stands in third place equal with Albert Marder, trailing only Capablanca (9) and Edward Tenenwurzel (6).
Black enjoyed the advantage of an extra pawn at the time of the adjournment of his game with Phillips, although the presence of Bishops of opposite color led many experts to predict a drawn outcome for the contest. But Black succeeded in invading the enemy Queen-side with his Bishop and eliminating all the White pawns on that flank, after which victory became an easy matter.
