Oldrich Duras yesterday recorded his first victory earned over the board at the Rice Chess Club Summer Masters' Tournament by defeating Abraham Kupchik in a game adjourned from the tourney's sixth round. The Czech Master, as second player in a Queen's Gambit Declined, brought the resumed contest to a quick conclusion; in the final position the passed Black c-pawn, which had reached the penultimate rank, stood poised to advance and cost White his Rook. Kupchik thus incurs his first point on the debit side of the ledger, while with this victory Duras increases his score to three points, as he and all other competitors have been awarded two games by forfeit following the withdrawal of Messrs. Stapfer and Beihoff. Yesterday also saw the completion of the adjourned fifth-round game between Roy T. Black and Oscar Chajes, which was won by the former, an encounter whose score we unfortunately have not been able to procure. In other news, the tournament committee has denied Edward Tenenwurzel's protest of his loss via time limit violation to José Capablanca, an incident discussed in an earlier entry. Capablanca thus sees his score rise to 9-0, and the score chart below reflects this change, as well as the day's other results:
